Right from the inception or founding of the Missionaries of the Sacred hearts of Jesus and Mary by St. Gaetano Errico, the congregation has continued to grow and to spread to different parts of the world. Similarly, the Nigerian delegation has experienced tremendous growth and development like a mustard seed which grows to become a mighty tree.
The congregation was brought to Nigeria through the instrumentality of Rev Fr. Luigi Toscano and other Indian members of the congregation in the year 2000. It began as a small community at Works Layout Owerri from where it continued to grow and extend to other areas. Rev. Fr. Mathew Cherian MSsCc became the first official delegate superior of the Nigerian delegation. In 2013, the mantle of leadership of the congregation in Nigeria was handed over to Nigerian priests who were to pilot the affairs of the congregation in Nigeria. Rev. Fr. Peter Morkah MSsCc became the first Nigerian delegate superior, Rev. Fr. Michael Ebomuche MSsCc became the Rector, Rev. Fr. Princewill Nwokeocha MSsCc became the Prefect of Formation, and Rev. Fr. Chidi Uguru Onwuka became the Novice Master, and Fr. Cornelius Okafor MSsCc as the Vocations Director.
Presently, we have our community at Ulakwo Owerri Which is a formation house for the training of seminarians both for the religious life and for the priesthood. We also have a functional clinic in order to meet the health needs of the villagers, as well as a nursery and primary school for the promotion of quality education in accordance with the spirit and charism of St. Gaetano Errico.
Our community at works layout Owerri comprises our novitiate house and our special jurisdiction which has a commendable number of worshippers. Rev. Fr. Chukkwuemeka Okafor MSsCc and Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Ekwelum MSsCc were formaly incharge of the special jurisdiction before they handed over to Rev. Fr. Michael Agazie MSsCc and Rev. Fr. Dennis Shavanger MSsCc. Today Rev. Fr. Michael Agazie MSsCc and Rev. Fr. Kentigern Aririguzo MSsCc are the priests in charge of the special jurisdiction.
We also have our parish at Ndegwu by name Holy Cross parish Ndegwu. The parish was given to our congregation by the Archbishop of Owerri Archdiocese, Most Rev. Dr. A. J. V. Obinna in the year 2014. Rev. Fr. Princewill Nwokocha MSsCc was the first member of our congregation to become the Parish Priest in this parish assisted by Rev. Fr. Damian Anumba MSsCc. Presently, Rev. Fr. Kenneth Onyechege is the Parish Priest.
As a concrete proof of the growth of our congregation in Nigeria, the Missionaries of the sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Nigerian delegation has a total number of 26 priests currently. They are working in Nigeria and in different parts of the world like, Italy, America, Canada, Germany, Argentina, Cameroun etc. In Nigeria our priests are working in the Archdiocese of Owerri, Archdiocese of Onitsha, Lagos Archdiocese and Markurdi diocese.
Presently, Rev. Fr. Geoffery Obinna Nwafor MSsCc is the Delegate Superior of the Nigerian delegation. Rev. Fr. Chukwuemeka Okafor MSsCc is the rector, Rev. Fr. Anthony Enemuo MSsCc is the Vice Rector and the director of school, Rev. Fr. Austin Udoette MSsCc is the Vocation Director, and Rev. Fr. Chidi Uguru Onwuka MSsCc is the Novice Master.
Finally, the Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Nigeria delegation still works tirelessly to spread the love of the Sacred Hearts through the ministry of the word and through works of charity.
